Mary Copeland was born in the San Diego area, but moved with her family to San Francisco between 1900 and 1910. Her mother, Nellie, died just before Mary turned 6 years old. Her father, Fred worked as a stationary engineer in San Diego (1900 census), then as a foreman at a wooden pipe shop (1910 census) in San Francisco. He was eventually remarried to Mrs. Isabelle Stearns Burbeck. Mary had two older siblings -- her sister, Agnes, who was 5 years older, and brother, Shirley, who was 4 years older than Mary.
