Richard Berkeley Cotten (married to Madelyn)

Richard's father, Shepard M. Cotten, moved his family all over the place (Oregon, California, Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas atleast), and worked as a civil engineer.  Richard had two siblings:   Barbara E Cotten, born in Missouri 3 years before Richard, and Carol J. Cotten, who went by Aunt Jan, was born in California when Richard was 6 years old.

Richard's mother, Ruth Ethie Wilson was very focused on the family genealogy. Her Father registered Ruth as a member of the Children of the American Revolution. She was proud of her heritage and attempted to gain membership while living in Phoenix, Arizona but the first claim was rejected. Ruth later registered Richard and Barbara Eloise in the Children of the American Revolution while residing in San Francisco. On Cotten Family History- (Paternal information) I hold the files of letters, correspondence with cousins from several lines of family. I have added some but not all of the lineage on the family tree which my brother Gordon Thomas, has established on Ancestry.com.

Ruth signed letters "Grom" to all grandchildren. Her interest in Genealogy shifted to an appreciation of the Irish Heritage and I was told she was a member of the Gaelic society in San Francisco.

I have now traced the Cotten line back to the 1400s through Ancestry.com, though I have a sneaking suspicion I've been following in the tracks already laid by Sammi.

If anyone would like to have access to the tree, please email me and I'll open it up for you.

Gordy (Gordon) Thomas
son of Carol Janice "Jan" Cotten

Gordon, there appears to be a serious error in the ancestry.com lineage on the Cotten lineage. Extracts from Bruce Cotten to Ruth Ethie Wilson maintain consistenly the spelling of the family name as COTTEN. Robert Cotten is the son of JOBE COTTEN and Sally Wilson although the will (dated feb 1796) mentions his wife to be "Anna" and eight children Whitman, James, Josiah, Robert, John, Mary, Elizabeth (m.Helms)and Doratha. Whitman was desc. James lived in Edgecombe Co, desc. not known, Josiah prob. miscalled Joseph, and said to have gone to Shelby Co., Tenn." The above being the extract typed notes and Ruth's hand written notes say that the Sally part is correct, mother of all the children and that Anna was a second wife.
The father, grandfather and great grandfather of Jobe were all named JOHN COTTEN

I will attempt to scan (in pdf) and email this to you and Bari so that Sammi can also see this doc.

Ruth's quest was always to document the lineage and participation of family members present at the time of the Colonial revolution to ascertain credible membership for the Daughters of the American Revolution. BRuce Cotten was able to provide information that may have been sufficient. She chose not to follow the Cotten lineage for that claim.
