I saw a post on the Marin County Geneological Society board about the McLeans from Belvedere. Here is the link: http://www.sfgenealogy.com/boards/mcqueries/messages/93.html
I would run full speed down this lane when I was a child (1948-53). It was as close to flying as I've ever gotten! I still have dreams of actually flying down the lane. There were open fields on both sides, really tall anise weed grew along the sides. It smelled like licorice, but was nasty to taste. The steps were dirt & gravel fronted with 2x4's.. really shallow & deep. We (me 'n Bud) had to run REALLY fast in order for our legs to reach from step to step. On the way up, it took 2 steps for each lane step... We weren't very old, so maybe the steps were easier for grownups! I have a picture of Mama as a toddler in her backyard (I'll post it after we move to Oregon..) Their yard was almost bare; not lush as shown in this picture which was taken 75+ years later!
My memory of this lane was as a child, we would usually get to gramma's house in the evening, driving all the way from Bakersfield in a day. I would be so excited, this was my most favorite place to run. But in those days, it was a gravel path with boards keeping the gravel in. They were uneavely spaced and a little rickety. So if you started running down them, it was very tricky not to trip and really get banged up. That happened alot to me. This path went down a whole block, hit a street, then continued on for another block, close to the fire department, where pop was a volunteer. And I remember Gramma always had Geraniums and Lobelia growing in her yard in pots, and yes the smell of licorice. Good memories.
The Belvedere-Tiburon Landmark Society still sells copies of this book. It has Madelyn's mother's history and a lot more about Belvedere and how she and her family lived.
